The village Jahnsbach, now a district of the town of Thum, is located right in the heart of the beautiful Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains). It is an example of a Waldhufendorf type settlement (string village) which is characterized by long-narrow fields that are cut back into the forest behind each new holding. From Jahnsbach one of the main access roads leads to the rock world of the Greifensteine - steep granite rocks nearby the idyllic dam of Greifenbachstauweiher which is also known as Geyer pond.
Tourism developed favourably in Jahnsbach thanks to its location close to the rock world of the Greifensteine. Surrounded by dense forests the area around the Greifensteine is highly recommended. The woodland paths are ideal for cycling and rambling. In autumn there is nothing that can stop hikers from going out. During winter time the cross-country ski-tracks offer scope for sportive activities. The Ore Mountains are also known as the Land of Christmas. The advent season with its sea of lights is the most beautiful time of the year. All guests are delighted to see the miners having their traditional parades.
North of the village the forested mountain Richterberg rises up to 634m of altitude followed by the municipality of Auerbach. To the south there is the rock world of the Greifensteine and the town of Geyer. To the east the town of Thum and to the west the municipality of Hormersdorf are located.
The view of Jahnsbach is primarily dominated by the Church of the Holy Cross built in Art Nouveau style. The charming pond Mühlteich and some listed buildings with half-timbered upper floors provide the village with a distinctive flair. An allotment site, two sports grounds and a gym cater for recreation needs and provide space for physical exercises. Those interested in traditional handicraft from the Erzgebirge can adore the wooden products in the carver's museum.
Nowadays the appearance of the locality is characterized by attractive dwellings and numerous private residential buildings that have been erected in recent years. Since 1st January 1999 the former independent communities Jahnsbach and Herold have become districts of the town of Thum.
